Have you ever noticed that the huge crystal ball dropping in Times Square every year doesn’t magically fix everything? Even the best and most sincere New Year’s resolutions tend to slowly fade away in January… Why? Because deep thought patterns are "grooved" into the network of our brains, and beliefs and habits are always THOUSANDS of times more powerful than our desires. If we want something we’ve never had this New Year, then we’ve got to do something we’ve never done: think new thoughts. “If I can conceive it, then I can ACHIEVE it.” How about this for a New Year’s resolution: a NEW MIND.

Fear vs. Faith
Fear versus Faith: which one makes more sense as a life strategy? Faith is being SURE of what I hope for and CERTAIN of what I do not see. On the other hand, Psychology tells us that 99% of the things that we fear, NEVER materialize; still, so many people live their lives obsessed with what MIGHT happen next... As a strategy, I would rather keep my eyes and mind fixed on what I DESIRE in my life, and assume that the setbacks along the way are there to better prepare me for all the good that lies ahead. Of course, if fear works better for you as a life plan, then knock yourself out. (It IS an effective motivator, if you can just get past all the paralysis, stress and general anxiety)

Perspective
What if we looked at things differently today? What if I CHOSE to see the good in everyone I meet, and disregard their “faults”? Faith
I can’t imagine life without faith… There is so much about life that is a mystery to me; so many things that I can’t understand, touch, feel, see or comprehend. Some things I just have to “know”. I KNOW that there is someone watching over me. I KNOW that He has my back, and that ALL things are under His control. I know He doesn’t make mistakes, never overlooks the details, and always shows up on time. He ALWAYS has the patience and concern to listen to my problems, and always comes through with the EXACT thing that I need— EVERY time… I can’t explain it, I just KNOW. I can’t imagine living life without faith. (I’ve tried, by the way, and it's exhausting)

I believe everyone longs to experience true joy; that’s why the holidays can be tough for many people. We’ve all been there at times in our lives, but unfortunately it seems rare these days; I think a lot of people are looking for it in the wrong places... You definitely won’t find it in “things”, and it doesn’t come from more money (although we’ve all searched there). I believe true joy hides in COMPASSION, and is triggered by GRATITUDE—some of the last places we’d look… I sincerely hope you find some this holiday season, for it is buried deep inside of every one of us.

Second Chances
I’m very grateful to be going to spend some time with a new, good friend today… He's just been released from Hays State Prison, and will now begin his new life in the “free world”. He’s a good man who made a mistake, paid his debt, and will start to rebuild his life again. He has a wife and child, and sincerely wants to change. Thank God for second chances… Where would we ALL be without them?

Mission

"If you don't know where you're going, then any road will get you there..." I believe there is incredible power in Purpose. Individuals need Mission Statements as much, or more than companies do. Today many people got up before the sun to go to the malls and fight the traffic, the crowds, and the lines-- all just to get the best deals on this season's hottest gifts. The "season of giving" has officially begun... Trust
Trust: "reliance on the integrity, strength, ability, surety, etc., of a person or thing; confidence; confident expectation of something; hope." Those that have it, and do not lose it, have a different life experience. It is more than just believing, but KNOWING that everything is going to be alright. That there is One who has all knowledge, power, and presence, watching over EVERYTHING. He's never missed anything, and He has it ALL under control. (Even if we can't figure it all out yet.)

Judging

Parachutes
On my first and only sky diving attempt, my primary parachute malfunctioned and had to be cut away. The emergency chute, packed carefully by my instructor Ted, literally saved my life... We have people in our lives that have rescued us, or have been very instrumental in our success-- they "packed our chute". Why not take the time to thank them today-- where would you be without them? My Dog
We love our dog Bogie... Good Ole Bogie-- he ALWAYS has a good day; he's ALWAYS happy to see me, even if I've only been gone ten minutes, he's like "You're Back!" Today I get to go and spend 6 hours with over 100 inmates at a Maximum Security Prison-- many of whom have become my friends. You know what I'll find there? Transformation... Just for today... I love it when someone has the guts to call their shot. Babe Ruth pointing to the stands before his home run in the 1932 World Series. Underdog Joe Namath guaranteeing victory before Super Bowl III in 1969. Confidence, not arrogance; assurance, not cockiness... Why don't we start calling some shots in this environment of fear and negativity-- let someone know that you're gonna knock one out of the park today.

Attention
Attention: "a concentration of the mind on a single object or thought; a state of consciousness characterized by such concentration; a capacity to maintain selective or sustained concentration." Out of everything fighting for my focus today, what will get my very valuable attention? I will CHOOSE to concentrate on what I desire today, and disregard worry and fear. For whatever gets my attention, expands.

A brand NEW day, with unlimited possibilities... Just imagine: new ideas, new partnerships, new calls, new clients, new discoveries, new goals and strategies, new inventions and creations, new collaboration and teamwork, new potential for success and victory. Imagine
Ask yourself what you really want. Now activate your imagination and REALLY visualize it (with all the sounds, smells, feelings, tastes, etc.). Now begin to affirm it aloud-- speak of it as a REALITY... Millions of neurons must fire in just the right way, and connect with others to begin to form pathways to "see" what you have just begun to create. Now, go and find it.

Harmony: "Agreement in feeling or opinion; a pleasing combination of elements in a whole." When people come together and unite in a common purpose, there is incredible power. I get to go back and see my new little friends at Whitefoord Elementary School this morning. Alesia at Project Karma and I go there to help them learn about the grief process and hopefully choose an alternative to street gangs. Transformation
Hays State Prison. 42 inmates--white, black, hispanic. Three amazing days: in before the sun came up, and out well after dark. They were served, loved, respected; we laughed, cried, hugged, confessed, sang, studied, prayed, bonded. There was power, healing, and brokenness there--and I have deep friendships within those walls. I can't get them off my mind or out of my heart--and I don't want to.

Grace
For the last three days I have witnessed inmates at Georgia's highest maximum security prison open their hearts and minds, begin to hope, start to learn to trust, forgive, hug, cry and perhaps begin to heal and change... I am completely overwhelmed by the amazing, life-changing grace of God.

Children
Blessed are the children... Children have a lot of things on straight that we might need to figure out all over again: they focus on things that make them come alive; when they fight, they make up quickly so they can get back to the good stuff; they are quick to forgive, they make friends easily, and trust to a fault; they spend time in their imagination... Intention
Intention: "An act or instance of determining mentally upon some action or result; the object toward which the thoughts are directed; an aim that guides action." Intention is when the mind, with great earnestness, and of choice, fixes its view on any idea. Set your mind on what you intend to FIND today-- don't worry about the "how"... Adventure: "an exciting or very unusual experience; participation in daring enterprises; a bold, usually risky venture." Doesn't that pretty much describe LIFE right now? However, when you were young, wasn't that what you dreamed of (excitement!). What if everyone fully participated in this grand adventure, and quit all the complaining... Sure would make for a better ending.

Is laughter really the best medicine? Here are just a few of the benefits: it boosts immunity; lowers stress hormones; decreases pain; relaxes your muscles; prevents heart disease; triggers the release of endorphins; enhances resilience; and eases anxiety and fear... Confidence
Confidence: "belief in the trustworthiness, or reliability of a person or thing." You can sense it when someone has it (like animals can sense fear). Problem is, you can also sense it when someone is faking it-- then it just comes across as arrogance... But when someone has a deep trust in one above and beyond themselves, there is a strong, attractive power at work. Here's to your true confidence today.

Responsibility
Responsible: "answerable or accountable, as for something within one's power, control, or management; being a source or cause." We live in a world where fewer and fewer people take responsibility for their actions-- so much easier to excuse, rationalize, blameshift. Drama: "any situation having vivid, emotional, conflicting, or striking results." It seems that our world has become addicted to "drama". Arguments, road rage, gossip, emotional outbursts-- drama everywhere... People seem to love drama-- but then they complain about the stress... Why not assume that today is going to be your best day in months? Great energy, connections, victories-- you know, right place, right person, right time, etc... Tenacity
Tenacity: "holding fast; characterized by keeping a firm hold; persistent or obstinate." Things tend to get toughest right before the greatest victory comes, almost like a paper wall; it looks daunting, but all you need to do is run on through (like a football team coming on the field-- can you imagine them stopping right before the paper banner?) Don't quit 5 minutes before the miracle happens, just hang on and "run on through."

Trust
Trust: "reliance on the integrity, strength, ability, and surety of a person or thing." As the water rose yesterday in Atlanta, it occurred to me that the illusion of "control" we think we have is just that: an illusion (the same way I felt 2 years ago when the drought hit). At the end of the day, I just trust that HE knows what He's doing... I know 2 things: there is a God, and I'm not him. (Trust brings Peace.)

Intention
Purpose, vision, direction, intention... "If you don't know where you're going, then any road will get you there." Get a clear vision of where you ARE going. Write it down (only 3% of people in the world write down their goals). Then post a picture of the envisioned, accomplished intention, and look at it every day-- that'll put your plan on "steroids." Dream BIG, and let's go get 'em!

I Am
What I THINK about has a lot to do with how I FEEL. How I FEEL tends to determine what I DO. What I choose to DO has a lot to do with what I FIND in life. This is a tough time for many good people... Some are fighting to stay afloat financially. Others are battling health issues. Some are going through scary times with their children. What do you want? I mean, what do you really want? It occurred to me that, for the most part, I have almost always gotten what I REALLY desired in life... Redemption
Redemption: "the purchase back of something that had been lost, by the payment of a ransom; rescue." I have become good friends with a young man who has done some very bad things. He is trying to change as hard as any man I've ever seen. He's taken responsibility for the life he's lived, and he wants to help people avoid the life he chose. Friends
I spent the last week on the road with three of my best friends. Where would I be without the brothers that I have in my life? I shudder to think... I have friends to watch my back, pick me up when I fall, carry me when I'm weak, fight for me when I'm in danger, tell me the truth, and just chill out and laugh with (and we did ALOT of that). I hope you have friends like that-- we ALL surely need them; and I love mine.

Love
I love my kids. I love their individuality, their uniqueness, the things that make them different and so special. There is NOTHING that could cause me to stop loving them. Nothing that they could do or not do, nothing that could separate them from my love. Where does that kind of love come from? Certainly not from me, my heart is too flawed. Differences
I love variety...Wouldn't life be unbearable if everyone was exactly the same? A belief is nothing more than a thought that has been run through the mind so many times that it has been hardwired into our internal software, and accepted as fact. 500 years ago, EVERYONE believed that the world was flat (except one "crazy" man). CHALLENGE your beliefs--they will determine much of your reality in life.

Perspective
I've gotten to know a man who is currently serving four consecutive life sentences, but is trying to change... He recently said they wanted to transfer him. He said they needed to biopsy his liver which might be diseased. I asked when he was leaving. He looked surprised and said: "Now why would I let a doctor do anything that's going to extend my time on the chain-gang?" It gave me perspective about my "problems."

Faith
When life comes at me hard and heavy, it sure is good to KNOW that there is someone watching over EVERYTHING. He makes no mistakes, no oversights, no miscues or miscalculations--everything is a tiny part of some grand, mysterious plan... It helps me to remember that there is no decision that He can't overturn, no mistake that He can't forgive. No failure is final, and He is always and forever in COMPLETE control.
Affirmations
Is there really power in daily affirmations? The non-conscious brain runs much of the show (90-95%). Your beliefs and habits, which live there, are thousands of times stronger than your desires. When you speak a powerful, positive affirmation about what you believe to be true about yourself, the brain hears what is said and creates a "mental loop", which reinforces the thought. The brain is ALWAYS learning: Teach it.

Champions
Rocky, Rudy, Hoosiers, the Titans...What do they all have in common? The "UnderDog" rises up to knock out the "Bully". Everybody loves a good comeback: against all odds, he reaches down deep, finds a part of himself he (or she) didn't know they had, and a champion shows up--it's classic David and Goliath...There are lots of fine people out there right now that need a comeback win. Time
86,400... Pretty big number, sounds like alot. However, it flies by... 86,400 seconds in a day. How I choose to invest those precious "pieces of time" is very important, because I can NEVER get them back. Today I will make the most of them-- I will thank, behold, appreciate, hug, honor, cherish and love those in my life. Because today's the MOST important day of my life (it's the only one I truly ever have).

I once was blind, asleep, numb, dull, wounded, anesthetized, apathetic--walking through life in a trance... Today I see, I feel, I care, I act-- I AM ALIVE. Respect: "the condition of being esteemed or honored; a sense of the worth of a person; to hold in honor." Who is worthy of respect? Is it something earned or deserved? I believe ALL people should be given respect. As a matter of fact, the ones who rarely receive it, are the ones who need it the most. Find someone who hasn't seen it in a while, and show them some much needed respect-- it just might change their life.

Sometimes the "hard" is what makes it GREAT. The joy, pain, ups, downs, struggles, victories, stench, aromas, hardships, triumphs... Oh, the struggle is the good stuff-- without it we would most likely be bored, spoiled little children.
Peace
Now more than ever, people long for peace, joy, and love (whether they're aware of it or not). Like most things of value, they aren't necessarily found in the most likely places. I've discovered that peace resides in FORGIVENESS; joy hides in COMPASSION; and love is buried deep in the heart of SERVICE... Try as you might to find them elsewhere, peace, joy and love will always live in those who choose to GIVE.

Visualize
Visualize today where EVERYTHING goes your way: You show up at just the right time; you meet just the right person; you say just the right thing; you give them exactly what they need-- you're COMPLETELY in "the zone" (millions of neurons had to fire and connect in JUST the right way to create that vision in your mind). Now go and FIND it--unless of course that "nightmare scenario" works better for you as a strategy.

There's a force that runs through things--a "LIFE FORCE" which sustains and animates us. The flesh opposes it at times, but when its nourished, it is resilient and practically unstoppable. Who says miracles don't happen in today's world? Which is harder: to turn water into wine, or to change a person who has been the SAME for twenty years-- I would argue the latter... The crack addict who begins to feel; the gang-banger who begins to love; the inmate who begins to care. Oh yes, miracles happen every day-- you just gotta open your eyes, and know where to look... Energy
This we know: All matter is made up of tiny packets of "energy". These packets vibrate at different speeds. They communicate through frequencies, much like radio or satellite signals... Slower energy vibrations, such as shame and fear, bring us "down." Faster energies like joy and love are "exhilarating." Why not "set your frequency" (mood) today, before the world sets it for you? You'll be amazed what you find.

Forgiveness
What if, after its all said and done, life is ALL about forgiveness? Receiving it first, and then offering it to EVERYONE (especially the unforgivable)... Lack of forgiveness makes the soul sick; true forgiveness not only heals, but is totally and completely liberating. You want to be free? Seek out the one who needs to be forgiven-- it'll change your life.

Stress
Stress: "physical, mental, or emotional tension; a specific response by the body to a stimulus, as fear or pain, that disturbs or interferes with the normal physiological equilibrium of an organism." Stress is all about "resistance" --when I feel it, all I need to do is locate the area of my life that is outside of acceptance... Some things are IN my control, and some things aren't-- why fight what I can't change?

Grace
Grace: "the freely given, unmerited favor and love of God; the influence or spirit of God operating in humans to regenerate or strengthen them; divine love and protection bestowed freely on people." Looking back on my journey so far, I know I've done some pretty foolish, selfish and ungodly things--wasted alot of time... Now as I look at all the blessings in my life, I can honestly say: Grace is truly AMAZING... Wow.

Resistance
"Whatever I resist, I STRENGTHEN." Think about it: Want to build muscle? Resist. What escalates an argument? Resistance. Traffic jam? You get the picture-- Stress is all about resistance... Why not try the opposite response to things that bother you: "Accept it, embrace it, and release it." The argument is diffused, the traffic becomes a timely break, even a headache can dissolve... The "Is-ness" of life-- accept it.

Epiphany
Epiphany: "a sudden, intuitive perception of or insight into the reality or essential meaning of something, usually initiated by some simple, homely, or commonplace occurrence; a comprehension or perception of reality by means of a sudden intuitive realization." Sometimes we have "a moment of clarity"... Mine today: I am loved, I am blessed-- Life is so good.

Joy
Happiness is quite different than Joy... Happiness has to do with circumstance-- if "things" are going well, then we can be "happy". Joy dwells deep within-- it's innate. I've seen souls living under a bridge with true joy. I'm the only one that can interrupt my joy today-- nothing outside of me can touch it. Look within, though it might be covered up... Change
People CAN change. I'm watching a young man being truly transformed. He spent the last 12 years rising up in what National Geographic calls "The World's Most Dangerous Gang" and now he tells/shows me that all he wants to do is help kids stay out of the life that he chose. It reminds me that anything is possible--and to NEVER judge by the outside appearance (you never know what's really in there until you LOVE).

Energy
What a different world it would be if people used their precious energy for creativity, collaboration, problem solving, etc. instead of griping, complaining and excuse making... I get to CHOOSE how I use my energy every day-- and that depends on my focus. Energy is FUEL: do something productive with it, rather than burning your neighbor's house down... However, it's your choice (but I will DIRECT my energy today).

Thoughts
"As a man thinketh..." The average human adult has over 50,000 unique thoughts in a 24 hour period. The problem? They typically tend to be the same thoughts they had yesterday and the same ones they'll have tomorrow. Is it a wonder so many feel like they're in a rut? Get some new material today--feed your most fascinating organ something fresh--something that will SERVE you and make you better, stronger--ALIVE.

Perspective
It occurred to me that the most fulfilling work that I am now involved in happens to be directly related to hardships, failures or mistakes from my past. Those times either prepared me for, or gave me a heart for those that I am now able to serve. Try to keep in mind that present victories are almost always preceded by trials and testing--God does some of His best and most significant work through pain...Hang in there!

Potential
I believe there is at least one special gift or talent inside of EVERYONE. It's buried deeper inside of some than others, and it's hidden very well sometimes--but it's like a "seed" or precious gold that needs to be discovered, mined and brought up. Sometimes even the one who has lost it is surprised when it appears--but that is where passion hides. Help someone discover their value today, and watch yours come alive.

Synchronicity
Synchronicity: "The coincidental occurrence of events that seem to be meaningfully related." Ever been stuck in traffic, making you LATE, only to arrive at the perfect time, so that you meet a random stranger, that happens to be the right person, at the right place, with exactly what you need? Just try to stay in the groove today, and assume that "what you need, is already on it's way." (It also helps with traffic!)
